Top 10 electric cars with the longest range

Electric car range

If you’ve been thinking about buying an electric car, the biggest concern you probably have is the car’s range. Range anxiety has deterred many drivers from switching from regular combustion engine vehicles to electric ones. However electric cars have come a long way over the past few years and long range is no longer a rarity. Whether you’re going on long motorway journeys, or need a car to commute, there is an electric car for everyone. We’ve compiled a list of electric cars with the highest range, helping you make the easy switch to electric.

Tesla Model S – 367 miles

The Tesla Model S is one of the top of the range electric vehicles, and rightly so because it has an impressive range of 367 miles. The Model S is industry leading, with plenty of convenient charging points all over the world. It can recharge up to 133 miles in just 15 minutes from any supercharger. As well as having impressive range, it also boasts a number of innovative tech features, such as its 360-degree rear, side and front facing cameras, its 12 ultrasonic sensors to assist with parking and preventing collision, and a 160m long range view of distant objects on the road. Plus, its futuristic Autopilot Advanced Safety feature can assist you with the most mundane parts of driving.

Keeping up with the latest tech, the Tesla Model S also has over the air software updates to continuously update performance, features and functionality. You can access all of this via the generous 17inch touchscreen infotainment display. With the Model S, convenience is not just about the technology, but its space too. It has a generous 804 litres of storage space which is more room than most SUVs. And if you’re worried about performance with an electric car, think again. The Tesla Model S can go from 0-60mph in just 2.4 seconds!

Tesla Model 3 - 348 miles

Making its way to second place is the Tesla Model 3 which has an impressive 348 miles of range with its long-range battery. It has an All-Wheel-Drive dual motor which can take you from 0-60pmh in just 3.2 seconds – faster than a Ferrari GTC4 Lusso. Plus, the Model 3 can be charged up to 170 miles in 30 minutes with a supercharger.  Most supermarkets and service stations have a supercharger, so you can charge your car while you get your shopping done.

Safety is key for the Model 3 with its strong aluminium and steel structure. According to Tesla, in a crash test, the Model 3 resisted 4 times its own mass (the same weight as two fully grown African elephants) – and that’s with an all glass roof too. The interior is slick and high tech with its 15-inch touchscreen display, over the air software updates and expansive glass roof which extends from the front all the way to the back.

Tesla Model X - 314 miles

The Tesla Model X is a luxurious 7-seater car, with an excellent long-range battery, ranging up to 314 miles. It’s also the quickest SUV in the world and can go from 0 to 60 in just 2.7 seconds! The All-Wheel Drive dual motor gives the Model X stability and good traction on the road in all weather conditions. Despite being an SUV, its design is incredibly sleek, with the largest, all-glass, panoramic and solar tinting windshield in production. The Model X is built with the driver’s comfort and practicality in mind. For example, it’s very spacious, and has fold-flat seats for maximum space. The design is aerodynamic and gives the Model X the lowest drag coefficient on earth. But the Tesla Model X really stands out because of its falcon wing doors – a perfect example of Tesla’s show stopping design.

Jaguar I-Pace - 292 miles

The Jaguar I-Pace is Jaguar’s all electric SUV, boasting 292 miles of range, a 90kWh battery and 696Nm of instant torque. With a rapid 50kW charger, you can give the I-Pace a charge of up to 168 miles within an hour. The exterior design of the I-Pace is bold, with a low waistline, dramatic bonnet scoop and hunched rear. Its aerodynamic design means it has a low drag coefficient of 0.29Cd, allowing the I-Pace to accelerate quickly and smoothly.

Due to the nature of its electric powertrain, the Jaguar I-Pace is spacious inside and has plenty of storage. The boot has an impressive 656 litres of storage space – 1453 litres with the rear seats folded down.  The interior is minimalistic yet luxurious with its handcrafted touches.  The latest cutting-edge technology is integrated seamlessly throughout the cabin, such as entertainment and key information which can be accessed through the I-Pace’s Touch Pro Duo Infotainment system.

Looks aside, the Jaguar I-Pace is a powerful electric car. The 90kWh battery is made up of high-density lithium ion pouch cells. Its state-of-the-art thermal management system supports longevity in the I-Pace and periods of sustained maximum power. The car is propelled by two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors that generate 400PS. The result is an electric SUV that can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds.

Hyundai Kona Electric - 279 miles

The Hyundai Kona Electric is a brilliant car for your family. It’s bold, yet practical and has a range of 279 miles, powered by a 64kWh battery. Although it gives you practical and family friendly vibes from the outside, inside is a whole other story.

The interior is made of high-quality materials. Plus, you get all the modern tech to help make your driving experience comfortable and seamless. You have wireless charging, reducing the cable clutter in your car. The front seats are also heated, to help keep you warm during the winter. And for sound, you get a Krell premium sound system.

If you want to give the Kona a quick charge, you can use a rapid 50kW DC charger which will give it an 80% charge in 75 minutes. But what makes the Kona really stand out from other electric cars is that it’s not silent. Electric cars by their nature are silent.  However sometimes this can pose a problem as cyclists, pedestrians and the blind might not be able to hear your car approaching. The Hyundai Kona Electric has cleverly added their innovative Virtual Engine Sound System which plays a melodic driving sound to announce its presence to pedestrians and cyclists.

Safety is extremely important with the Kona Electric which is why Hyundai has the SmartSense system. This driver assistance system detects movement in standstill traffic and the Autonomous Emergency Braking uses the Kona Electric’s front radar and camera sensors to alert drivers when a pedestrian is sensed in front of a car.

Mercedes EQC – 259 miles

The Mercedes EQC has been designed to help drivers easily transition to an electric car. Its look and feel are familiar because Mercedes has essentially adapted the same platform as the GLC. It has two drive motors and an underfloor battery which give you a total range of 259 miles. Mercedes always has the driver’s safety in mind, and the EQC is no exception to this. The EQC is heavier than most competitor electric cars like the Audi e-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace, however this is to ensure it is protected as much as possible in the case of a crash. It’s an electric car so it’s bound to be quiet. But even the high-speed tyre and suspension noises are suppressed – giving you an even more peaceful journey. The EQC can go from 0-62 in just 5.1 seconds, thanks to the front and rear motors, which have a combined 204bhp. The interior is very similar to the GLC, apart from the trendy signature copper vents and addition of recycled materials on the dashboard and seats. On higher trims you can also get a futuristic head up display which projects key information such as mileage and directions onto your windscreen.

Renault Zoe – 245 miles

The Renault Zoe is modern, quirky and everything you would expect in an electric car. The exterior has bold curves and sleek lines, 100% LED lighting and you can get it in a range of brand-new bold colours. The interior is high tech and gives off a modern feel with its various materials. The seats are made from 100% recycled materials that have come from old seatbelts and plastic waste. The manufacturing process of the seats has reduced emissions by over 60% compared to the manufacturing of traditional materials.

However, when it comes to electric cars, it’s not just about the looks. Battery and charging are the most important – and the Renault ZOE delivers. Its Z.E. 50 battery has a 52kWh capacity and lets you drive up to 245 miles. The battery also stores 25% more energy than its previous version even though they both had the same dimensions. The battery is also located lower to the centre of gravity under the floor so unlike other electric cars, the battery doesn’t limit space in the car and boot.

The best part is, all you need is 30 minutes at a fast charger to get up to 90 miles charge on the ZOE. However, as most electric car drivers charge their car overnight, Renault has offered to provide a free fully installed 7kW home wall box charger.

Audi e-tron - 237 miles

The Audi e-tron is one of the most advanced Audis to date. The design of the e-tron is conventional to help SUV lovers make the jump to an electric car. It’s a car that people recognise and can easily adjust to, making it one of the most popular electric cars. Impressively, the e-tron has a range of 237 miles. It’s built with two powerful motors on each axle which combined have 402bhp and a 95kWh battery in between. The inside of the e-tron is spacious and this is partly due to it being a five-seater and having 605 litres of boot space. It comes with all the modern tech such as LED headlights, adaptive air suspension, keyless, charging points on both sides of the car and 360-degree cameras to give you a full view. The Audi e-tron has a gear level which won’t take long getting used to. All you need to do is pull it back to drive and push it forward to reverse! However, one feature that really makes it cutting-edge is the optional replacement of side mirrors with side cameras.  To drive, the Audi e-tron is smooth and quiet. It has a low centre of gravity which helps it stay balanced and gives it a good grip around corners.
