How long does it take to organise and how does it work?
Arranging car hires is normally pretty quick and if the vehicle is available, it can be the same day.
Once you have submitted your reservation request, our Central Reservations team will contact you to confirm it within one working day.
You will receive a confirmation email once this is complete. Two working days before your AMT Auto car rental is due to start, our branch will call you to conduct the pre-rental checks.
As part of this call, we will need to conduct a DVLA check for each driver on the booking (if they are a UK licence holder) and take full payment for the hire. Please make sure you have got a DVLA check code so we can do this.
The deposit and rental charge may be split across two cards in the name of the main driver. We accept Visa or Mastercard credit cards.
We will also confirm with you the booking details, ID requirements and the vehicle we have allocated for your hire.
At the start of your vehicle hire, we will check the ID for each driver, get the paperwork signed and hand over the vehicle with you. You’re then ready to go.
What hours do your reservations team operate?
Our reservations team are here to answer any queries or make a booking for you between 8am-6pm Monday to Friday and 8am-12 noon on Saturdays.
They are available by email at centralreservations@amtauto.co.uk, phone on 0800 009 6938 and via our online chat function at the bottom of the page.
Unfortunately, we are closed on Sundays and bank holidays (excluding Good Friday) but you can leave a message and we’ll get back to you the next working day.
Do you offer delivery and collection?
We do not offer delivery & collection services for personal daily rental, except for our airport car hire meet & greet services, available at Leeds Bradford Airport, Edinburgh Airport, Birmingham Airport and Heathrow Airport.
Can I start or end my hire outside of your opening hours?
You can, but there is an additional charge for any part of the hire car hire return or pickups that ends out of hours, and it is subject to availability.
The charge will be shown when you make a booking.
What should I do if I need to change or cancel my hire?
We know plans can change sometimes, so if you need to amend your hire within 24 hours of your start time (within opening hours), just call us on 0800 009 6938 to make any changes.
For any other changes you’re able to make them over the phone, by email or using the online chat function. If you need to cancel your vehicle hire, we don’t charge a cancellation fee on any hire cancelled with more than 24 hours’ notice (within operating hours).
If your plans do change and fall within the 24-hour window, there’s a £25 cancellation charge to cover administration costs.
Please note that if a booked delivery is already in progress during your cancellation, further charges will apply.
What identification do I need to rent a car?
As part of our validation process you must provide your driving licence and two additional forms of ID.
If you do not have a UK driving licence, one form of ID must be a passport. One form of ID must bear your signature and the other your driving licence address.
Acceptable forms of ID are; credit or debit card, national identity card, passport, bank statement, utility bill, or a council tax bill. All ID must be current, and statements/bills must be dated within the last 3 months.
Electronic statements or bills are acceptable only if the other form of ID is a passport or national identity card.
Will I need to show my driving licence?
Yes, we’ll need to see your licence. It’s a legal requirement that we register a valid driving license on the supporting car rental agreement when we deliver a vehicle.
The details of the licence must also match those of the owner of the credit/debit card used for payment of the hire. Since the 8 June 2015, the government no longer produce the paper counterpart of the driving licence, and therefore this can’t be accepted as a record of your driving history.
To validate your license, please bring the following information with you for the vehicle handover prior to the start of the hire period: driving license (photocard) and driving license check code.
Without this information we’ll not be able to validate your licence and therefore be unable to provide a vehicle hire. Photocopies can’t be accepted either.
How do I pay for my car hire?
If you are collecting your vehicle from a branch, payment is made upon collection.
If you are using our meet & greet service, the branch will contact you to take payment two working days before the start of your hire.
Please note that the full rental charge, including the deposit, must be paid using a credit card in the main driver’s name.
Do I need to leave a deposit and when is it refunded?
Yes, we ask for a deposit at the beginning of your car hire.
The deposit amount varies depending on your age and the vehicle you have booked, but is displayed on your booking confirmation. We use this deposit to cover any charges which may arise during or at the end of the hire including, but not limited to, speeding or parking fines, damage, excess mileage and fuel.
Upon returning your vehicle to a car rental branch, we will check that there are no additional items to charge for and then refund the deposit back to you straight away.
If you owe an excess mileage or fuel charge, this will be deducted from your deposit and the remainder refunded while you are present.
If you have used our airport meet & greet service to return the vehicle to an airport, the remaining deposit will be refunded within 1 working day.
If there is any new damage on the vehicle, the full deposit is held to allow us to provide an accurate cost, which we will do within 3 working days of the vehicle’s return.
We will then tell you the total deduction to be made and refund the remaining deposit to you.
We are members of the BVRLA and use the BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear Guide in assessing whether damage is acceptable.
Do I need to pay for fuel?
Yes, you pay for the fuel you use, and you should return the vehicle with the same level of fuel as when you collected it.
If the vehicle is returned under the level provided, then refuelling charges will apply at the FleetNews national average fuel price on the return date plus an administration charge of 50 percent of the cost of the additional fuel.
We can’t refund any unused fuel.
Can I end my hire early?
Yes, but please note that if you return the vehicle early, your costs may be recalculated if the number of days you had the vehicle falls into a different daily price band.
If you wish to end the hire before your booked return date, please contact us and we will explain this.
Are there any additional costs when renting a vehicle?
As long as your chosen mileage allowance is not exceeded, and the vehicle is returned with the same amount of fuel and with no additional damage, there should be no extra charges.
The only exceptions to this may be speeding or parking fines during your hire period (as any authority will contact the registered owner of the vehicle first) or if you require a delivery or collection outside of our normal office hours.
Do you have any cleaning charges?
Only if the vehicle is returned in an unacceptable condition.
This would apply the vehicle has been smoked in, has carried pets or is excessively dirty or stained.
As a member of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), we adhere fully to their Fair Wear and Tear guidelines regarding any damage.
What are the excess mileage charges?
Excess mileage charges vary depending on the vehicle supplied and can be found on your booking confirmation.
These are charged on a pence per mile basis, with excess mileage chargeable after every vehicle exchange and vehicle off-hire.
I am travelling to London, what is your policy on congestion charges?
It is your responsibility to pay for any vehicle movement, into, out of or within the ULEZ or Congestion Charge zones up to and including the final day of hire.
Where we receive a congestion charge notice, we will need to charge an administrative fee.
Who insures an AMT Auto rental vehicle?
AMT Auto insure any named driver during the period on the rental agreement.
Only those who are both named on the rental agreement and have passed our driver validation may drive the vehicle, even if they are insured under another policy.
Is there an excess on the vehicle insurance?
Yes, an insurance excess applies and is equal to the deposit amount on your booking confirmation.
Is maintenance included for vehicle rentals?
Servicing and normal maintenance items are included in your daily rate – this does not include items which require replacement due to driver abuse or damage.
What do I do in the event of an accident?
If you’re in an accident in one of our rental vehicles you need to get the details of the other party and call us straight away on 0330 055 2875.

What do I do if I break down?
If your vehicle develops a fault or breaks down call us straight away on 0330 055 2875 and we’ll help to get you moving.

How does leasing a car work?
A car lease is an agreement between the funder and a customer which allows you to drive a brand-new car for a fixed term. You pay an agreed initial payment plus regular monthly payments at a set amount for the term of the contract. You return the car at the end of the car lease contract.
Should I lease or buy a car or van?
Leasing has always been a popular option as people look to avoid vehicle depreciation and one-off large repair bills. Essentially, leasing a car or van allows you to spread the cost effectively. People may also find it’s an affordable way to get a higher value vehicle than they could afford if they were to buy it outright.
Why should I lease a vehicle from AMT?
We’ve been established for over 30-years, and in that time, we have built up extensive knowledge of the leasing marketplace and have developed strong relationships with manufacturers, dealerships, and funding companies Partners. Our financial standing and size gives us strong buying power – we purchase stock vehicles and larger volumes of vehicles at very competitive prices which means we can offer highly competitive lease deals to our customers. We can also offer some in-house funding if credit is an issue. For example, if you’ve just started a company and would struggle to get credit from a funder.
Who is the registered owner and keeper of a lease vehicle?
If you take out a contract hire agreement the finance company is the registered owner and keeper.

Our contracts range from 12 to 60 months depending on the vehicle and contract chosen. Generally, we can’t offer test drives as we don’t have a traditional forecourt like a dealership. So, if you live near one, we may have the vehicle you want on our fleet. How soon can I get my car?
We have a range of vehicles in stock which can be delivered to you within a few weeks. However, this is subject to acceptance of any finance agreements by your chosen funder and any cooling off periods applicable to personal contract hire customers. For other vehicles, we will go to our dealers in the first instance, but if a factory order is necessary, this can take much longer; particularly if a car is a new model or a facelift model. Our customer service team maintain regular contact with you to update you on delivery timescales as they get information from dealers and manufacturers.
Who supplies the vehicles?
All our vehicles are supplied through the relevant vehicle manufacturers UK dealer network.
Can I get my lease vehicle delivered?
We offer free UK mainland delivery, where your vehicle will be driven to your required destination. Delivery can be made by a transporter – but that will incur a fee. Collection depends on the type of contract taken.
Can I specify a time I’d like for my vehicle to be delivered?
You can request a morning or afternoon delivery slot for your new vehicle to be delivered. If you need a specific time, let us know and we’ll do our best to meet your request.
What is the initial deposit on a car lease?
With car leasing, a deposit is referred to as an advance payment and is non-refundable. While a minimum one month’s advance payment is available, typically an initial advance payment equivalent to three monthly payments is required. The larger the advance payment you make, the lower your monthly payments will be. When viewing a vehicle, use the term configurator to understand how advance payments can affect your monthly payment.
When are the advance payment and monthly payments taken?
Dates for the advance payment and monthly payments are dependent upon the finance provider. Some providers take the advance payment within 14 days of delivery of the vehicle, whilst others take payment before delivery is booked. Monthly payments are usually taken one month after delivery of the vehicle on a date set by the finance provider.
Who provides the funding for your lease vehicle options?
We have established long-term partnerships with Arval, Lex, Leasys, Novuna, Santander and VWFS.
Do lease vehicles from AMT Auto include a warranty?
Yes, all our vehicle lease options come with the full UK manufacturer’s warranty for your piece of mind.
What if I need a replacement for my lease vehicle?
If your contract included an optional relief vehicle, this can be arranged by calling the maintenance number provided by the finance company.
Is roadside assistance included?
Yes, AMT Auto lease vehicles include either 12-months or 3-years’ breakdown recovery, depending on the manufacturer.
What happens in the event of a breakdown?
Within the car or van book pack there will be an emergency number to contact. This service is available 24/7.
What is the agreed annual mileage limit on my leased vehicle?
We will agree an annual mileage limit with you before you take out the contract. The mileage band ranges from 5,000 up to 50,000 miles depending on the funder.
What if I exceed the agreed mileage on the vehicle lease contract?
If you go over the agreed mileage limit, you will incur an excess mileage charge. The price you will pay is outlined on your original quotation and official finance document. Any mileage over the contract is charged at the excess mileage rate (charged in pence per mile). As an example, if the excess was 4p per mile then for 1000 miles over contract you would be charged £40.
Why does the price increase with higher annual mileage?
The more miles you drive, the greater the depreciation, reducing the car’s value, similar to owning a vehicle. Consequently, the funder charges more to cover the loss in value.
Will the lease contract include vehicle excise duty?
Yes, either for the duration of the contract or for 12-months. This will depend on the type of vehicle lease contract taken.
Do leased vehicles come with insurance?
The vehicle lease contract doesn’t include insurance. However, AMT Insurance Solutions can offer you competitive rates. Just inform your account manager that you’re interested in car insurance, and they can arrange a competitive quote for you.
Is maintenance included on a leased vehicle?
Maintenance is an optional cost and includes all servicing, tyres, brakes, exhaust, battery and labour. For further details please ask a member of the team.
What happens when I need a lease vehicle serviced or repaired?
If you opted to include maintenance in your lease contract, you will have received a maintenance contact number from the finance company. From there, you can book the vehicle into a local approved garage.
What are my options at the end of the leasing contract?
This depends on the type of contract taken but usually, you can either hand the car back, extend the contract, or purchase the vehicle from the finance company or third party depending on the funder.
What happens at the end of the car lease contract?
At the end of the vehicle lease you can either arrange for it to be collected, or you can extend the contract on a monthly basis depending on the funder.
Can I cancel my vehicle lease early?
Contact AMT to request an early contract termination.
Can I buy my lease vehicle when my contract ends?
This option is available on some of our finance options. One of our account managers can provide you with more information if this of interest to you.
Can I take a test drive?
You certainly can book a test drive. Please book your test drive in advance of your visit to our Leeds dealership by contacting us and providing a copy of your driving licence at the time of booking. This ensures the car is ready for you upon arrival. Please bring your driving licence with you as well otherwise you won’t be able to take a test drive.
Do AMT cars come with service history?
All our stock at AMT Specialist Cars has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation and will all have a full car service history in line with the manufacturer.
Can I get my car delivered to my home?
How long will my car delivery take?
We want to ensure all cars advertised are ready to test drive. We aim to allow collection the very same day wherever possible and to have all our cars pre-inspected before they are displayed. However, due to high turnover, this may only be done after the order has been placed. If, for any reason we need more time to prepare your purchase, a maximum of three working days would be needed, ensuring your car is ready for hand over.

We try to accommodate all our customers’ needs with the use of a specialist independent delivery company.

Can you settle my outstanding car finance?
Can I buy my car with a credit card?
To secure the car for you, we are happy to take a credit card deposit of up £1,000. Then you just need to pay the balance, either by bank transfer or by visiting our showroom and paying via debit card.
Will the new car come with a warranty?
All our cars come with a manufacturer’s warranty if it is still valid based on the vehicle’s age. Initially, our cars had a minimum 3-year warranty, and some may have had even longer coverage. If the manufacturer’s warranty has expired, we provide a six-month warranty for your peace of mind. For more details about our warranty packages, just ask a team member.
Do you offer an extended car warranty?
Yes, we do. Most of our cars will still be under their manufacturer car warranty but if you are buying a car that’s older than three years old, we can provide you with a six-month warranty, with the option to extend that warranty for to up to three years. We partner with a company called Warrantywise to offer our warranty service.
Do you offer paint protection?
Yes, we offer an industry leading car paint and fabric protection called Life Shine from Auto Glym. We understand that you want to bubble wrap your car and keep it in the very best condition, which is why we offer our Auto Glym product as protection for your purchase. We also offer you £250 more for your part exchange car on its return if paint and fabric protection has been applied.

Can I choose a specific vehicle?
Yes, just select which model you’re interested in and we will get in touch to confirm which vehicles are available. There will normally be a choice of colours and we may have alternative specifications or engines available, depending on the vehicle. The vehicle you choose is then guaranteed for at least the minimum term in your agreement.
How many miles can I do?
You can select a monthly mileage allowance of between 1000 and 3000 miles per month, in 500 mile increments. Your quote will show the monthly cost for the mileage allowance selected. If you go above your mileage allowance and excess mileage charge will apply. When you make an enquiry we’ll always ask you about your mileage requirements so we can give you an accurate cost and avoid any excess mileage charges.
What’s the minimum hire period?
All of our short term lease vehicles are available for a minimum of just one month. If you need a vehicle for less than a month, you can find a daily rental car here.
Can I extend my short term lease agreement?
Yes, you can just keep extending the hire if needed unless we request the vehicle be returned. The maximum period you can have on the same agreement is 3 months – if you need a vehicle for longer than that, that’s fine, you’ll just need to sign up to a new agreement. When a vehicle has been requested for return you can choose to have another vehicle delivered to replace your current vehicle. We may not be able to guarantee a specific vehicle beyond the minimum period you sign up for, but we will always try to accommodate your preferences. If you do not wish to keep the vehicle you must return it to an AMT branch on the day the agreement ends. You can also request that we collect the vehicle, for an additional charge.
Can I return the vehicle early?
Once you have had the vehicle for at least the minimum period in your agreement you can return the vehicle to us at any time. If you are still within the minimum period, you can return the vehicle to us but we can’t refund any unused days as your rate is based upon the minimum period you choose.
Do you offer delivery and collection?
Yes, we can deliver and collect anywhere in the UK for an additional charge. Alternatively, you can visit one of our branches to pick up and return your vehicle.
Am I able to take the vehicle abroad?
If you wish to travel outside of the UK mainland, you’ll need to let us know when you book the hire so that we can arrange a travel abroad document called a VE103. We ask that you allow at least two working days prior to overseas travel so that we can make sure you receive the relevant documentation to avoid any delays at border posts. There will be additional charges to take the vehicle abroad. Some of our vehicles may not travel outside of the UK mainland so please tell us when you book your hire if you wish to travel overseas; we may not be able to authorise overseas travel if you request it after your hire has already begun. If we authorise overseas travel, you may only travel to the following countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and the United Kingdom.
From enquiry to receiving your vehicle, it will normally take around a week, depending on availability of the vehicle you request. You’ll be asked to complete an application form, which will be submitted for underwriting. While we do not undertake a formal credit check, we do complete some identity and eligibility checks. If your application is approved, we’ll confirm everything with you and ask you to send two forms of identification along with a copy of your photocard licence. When this is received, we’ll raise and send you your service agreement. This will be your contract with us and will clearly show you your: Minimum hire period Selected vehicle type Hire start and end date Monthly fee Selected monthly mileage allowance Deposit amount Terms and conditions If you’re happy with the contract, simply sign it and send it back to the email address supplied and we’ll arrange the vehicle for you.
Do you offer delivery and collection?
We can provide delivery and collection of your vehicle to anywhere on the UK mainland. An additional charge applies for this service.
Do you offer out of hours delivery and collection?
We do, but there is an additional charge for any part of the hire that needs out of hours delivery or collection. We’ll confirm this with you when you enquire.
What should I do if I need to change or cancel my hire?
We know plans can change sometimes, so if you need to make any changes to your hire just contact us by phone on 0800 009 6938 (Mon-Fri 0800-1800, Sat 0800-1200) or by email at bookings@amtvehiclerental.co.uk. Where you cancel any booking before the start date you will not be charged in respect of that booking unless: a) the vehicle was subject to special terms agreed between you and us which involved us incurring costs in relation to the vehicle before the start date in which case you will be liable for those costs; or b) we were en route to deliver the vehicle – this would be classed as an aborted delivery and a charge applies.
What identification will be required?
Upon handover, each driver will need to show us two forms of identification, in addition to their driving licence. The following ID requirements apply: If the driver does not have a UK licence, one form of ID must be a passport All forms of ID must be the original document, unless an electronic statement/bill is used One form of ID must be the driver’s signature and one the address of the driver All ID must be current, statements/bills must be dated within the last 3 months Electronic statements/bills are acceptable only if the other form of ID is a passport or national identity card The name, address, picture and signature on all forms of ID including driving licence must match
Will I need to show my driving licence?
Yes, we’ll need to see the original driving licence of each driver named on the hire when the vehicle is handed over. We cannot accept copies of driving licences. Since the 8th June 2015, the Government no longer produce the paper counterpart of the driving licence and therefore this can’t be accepted as a record of your driving history. If you have a UK driving licence, we will also need to conduct a DVLA check, so please make sure you have a valid DVLA check code from https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence before your hire. Without this information we won’t be able to validate your licence and therefore will be unable to hire.
For short term lease customers, before the start of the hire we need one month’s rental and the deposit amount stated on your service agreement paid in advance. Vehicles can’t be released until funds are cleared into our account. Your further monthly payments, and any additional charges will then be taken by direct debit each month until you return the vehicle to us. Please note, your initial payment must be made by Visa, Mastercard or bank transfer. We do not accept American Express. For any payment method used, the account name must match the name on your agreement.
Do I need to leave a deposit and when is it refunded?
Yes, a deposit will be required when you sign an agreement with us and it’ll be taken with the monthly rental at the start of the hire period. Deposits will vary depending on the vehicle selected and will be displayed on the agreement. The full deposit will be refunded at the end of the hire providing the vehicle is returned without any additional damage, the fuel level matches that at the start and there are no other outstanding charges.
Do I need to pay for fuel?
Yes, you must pay for the fuel you use. Vehicles are supplied with a minimum ¼ tank and ideally should be returned at the same level. If the vehicle is returned with less fuel than at the start of the hire there will be a charge for the fuel used. This is charged at the Fleet News national average fuel price on the return date plus an administration charge of 50 percent of the cost of the additional fuel. We can’t refund any unused fuel.
Are there termination charges if I return the vehicle early?
Yes, if you return the vehicle before the minimum period on your agreement has elapsed. You will be charged any remaining payments due up to the expiry of the minimum period. If you return the vehicle after the minimum period has expired, there are no termination charges and you will be refunded any unused days you have paid for, using the pro rata daily rate shown on your agreement.
Are there any additional costs?
Until you return the vehicle to us, we will continue to charge the monthly payment shown on your agreement. Once you return the vehicle, there are no additional charges unless the vehicle is returned damaged, late, with lower fuel than at the hire start or you have exceeded the mileage allowance. You will also be charged if you incur any fines during the hire, such as a fixed penalty notice or parking charge, or if you breach the terms of the rental agreement.
Do you have any cleaning charges?
Only if the vehicle is returned in an unacceptable condition. This would apply the vehicle has been smoked in, has carried pets or is excessively dirty or stained. As a member of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), we adhere fully to their Fair Wear and Tear guidelines regarding any damage. I am travelling to London, what is your policy on the congestion charges?
It is your responsibility to pay for any vehicle movement, into, out of or within the CCZ up to and including the final day of hire. Where we receive a congestion charge notice, we will need to charge an administrative fee.
You can arrange your own fully comprehensive insurance or you can request that we insure the vehicle for you for an additional cost. If you request to insure the vehicle yourself, it’ll be your responsibility to insure the vehicle from the moment you take it until the time it is returned to us or, collected by us. You must insure to its full value against loss or damage (including windscreen damage) by accident, fire or theft with a reputable insurance company. When you’ve signed and returned the agreement, we’ll give you the vehicle registration so you can get an insurance certificate that will need to be produced before the vehicle handover. You must make your insurance company aware that the vehicle is owned by AMT. If you need us to insure it for you, the vehicle will be insured by AMT for the duration of the hire. Each driver named will need to meet our eligibility criteria and ID requirements. Only those drivers named on the rental agreement are insured or authorised to drive the vehicle.
Is there an excess on the vehicle insurance?
If you insure the vehicle yourself, you’ll need to check with your insurance provider for any excess amount or restrictions that have been applied to your policy. If AMT insure the vehicle, the insurance excess if displayed on your agreement. For some drivers (such as young drivers, or those with certain licence endorsements), an additional excess is applicable, which will be confirmed once we have checked your eligibility to hire.
Is maintenance included?
Regular maintenance items, such as servicing and worn tyres are included in your rate. Items requiring replacement or repair due to driver abuse or damage are not included and would be charged for.
What do I do in the event of an accident?
If you’re in an accident in one of our vehicles you need to get the details of the other party and call us straight away. There is documentation in every car to guide you through our process if you are involved in an accident.
What do I do if I break down?
24hr Breakdown assistance is included for every hire. If you require breakdown assistance, the contact number for the service is 01782 203171. It is also displayed on your rental agreement and on the vehicle’s key tag.
