The best plug-in hybrids for range right now

March 31, 2026

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles didn't have a great start. When they arrived in the mainstream in the early 2010s, the pitch was seductive. You have the efficiency of an EV for daily driving, with a petrol engine standing by for longer or more demanding journeys. The reality? Far more frustrating. Tiny batteries offering just 10-20 miles of real-world electric range meant most drivers, especially company car users who rarely bothered charging, were simply carting around a heavy battery pack that did little but hurt the fuel economy. Many sceptics of the time had a great point. A PHEV that never got plugged in was, in many ways, the worst of both worlds. It was heavier than a conventional car, more expensive to buy, and less green in practice. On paper? PHEVs seemed like the future. The execution itself just seemed half-baked.

If we take a look at PHEVs today, that narrative has drastically changed. The new generation of PHEVs bear almost no resemblance to those early pioneers. Batteries have improved significantly, in both efficiency and size, with many now offering 70 miles or more of genuine electric-only range. This is enough to cover the vast majority of UK drivers' daily commutes without ever touching the petrol engine. The timing of this couldn't be better, UK fuel prices have surged sharply in early 2026, with petrol now averaging at a wallet-draining 155p per litre. Diesel is even more painful, approaching 190p per litre. Behind all of this chaos, a car capable of completing most journeys on cheap home electricity, with a full tank available for long journeys, no longer looks like a compromise. It looks like a smarter choice.

There's currently a plethora of PHEVs to choose from, and when there's choice, there's hesitation. To combat this, we've compiled a list of the 6 best PHEVs with some seriously high range.

6. Skoda Kodiaq iV - 76 Miles

Skoda's brand journey is quite impressive, once the punchline of many jokes, it has spent the last two decades quietly building a reputation as the smart buyer's choice. It's the car that gives you more space, practicality, and equipment without asking for a premium price. Nowadays, recommending a Skoda to someone doesn't raise eyebrows, it earns nods. This is in part what underpins the appeal of the Kodiaq iV.

The Kodiaq iV uses Skoda's second-gen PHEV system; a 1.5 litre TSI petrol engine paired with a 116bhp electric motor for a combined output of 204bhp, and a 0-62 time of 8.4 seconds. The 25.7kWh battery (19.7kWh usable) advertises a WLTP range of up to 76 miles, with real-world figures of 60-65 miles typical in warmer weather and dropping to around 40-50 miles in winter. Notably, the Kodiaq iV is the first Skoda PHEV to support DC rapid charging, accepting up to 50kW for a 10-80% charge in just 26 minutes. AC charging is possible at up to 11kW, completing the same window in around two and a half hours.

Even in winter, the Kodiaq iV promises an electric-only daily driving experience for most. It's perfectly possible, with the right discipline of home charging, to reserve the petrol engine almost exclusively for longer journeys, as it offers a combined total range in the area of 620 miles. One genuine trade-off that some should consider is that the battery takes up some of the underfloor space, and as a result, this PHEV variant doesn't come in a seven-seat configuration, only five-seat.

5. Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e - 80 Miles

The three-pointed star anointed by Mercedes is one of the most universally recognised symbols on the road, and for good reason. Mercedes consistently ranks among the highest for owner satisfaction, and its interiors set a standard that others spend considerable effort trying to match. With the GLC, it's more than just the spec sheet, its the feeling of sitting inside and understanding the quality that went into making it.

THE GLC 300e's transformation with this generation is impressive. The previous GLC PHEV could muster just 27 miles on battery power. The current model's 31.2 kWh battery (large even by PHEV standards, and more than double the previous capacity) offers a generous official WLTP range of up to 80 miles, with real-world results sitting around 60-70 miles. The system pairs a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine (254bhp) with a 134bhp electric motor, producing a total output of 313bhp and getting to 62mph in 6.7 seconds.

Let's talk charging, of which the GLC offers both AC and DC. AC charging at 11kW provides a full charge from 10-100% in around two and a half hours. While DC rapid charging was initially restricted to certain markets, the GLC 300e now offers optional 50kW DC charging in the UK, making public charging a genuinely viable option in addition to home charging. Crucially, the GLC's enormous battery combined with a full petrol tank translates to a total range of around 950 miles between fill-ups, making the case for this car on long journeys as compelling as it is for the daily commute.

4. Audi A3 TFSIe - 88 Miles

Audi occupies a very particular space in people's minds, it's the aspirational step up. The brand that says you've done well for yourself without shouting about it. For many people, the Audi A3 is the first premium car they've ever bought, and inside, the brand consistently delivers on the expectation of a subtle yet premium feel compared to rivals.

Sharing it's core PHEV hardware with the Golf, the Audi A3 TFSIe uses the same 19.7kWh battery and 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering the same headline WLTP electric range of 88 miles. The system produces a combined 204bhp and gets to 62mph in 7.4 seconds. AC charging is supported at up to 11kW, and DC rapid charging at up to 40kW, bringing the car into line with the refreshed Golf's charging speed.

3. Volkswagen Golf eHybrid - 88 Miles

There is arguably no more trusted car name in the UK than the Volkswagen Golf. It is the car that has defined sensible and reliable for generations of buyers. It's the dependable choice that rarely puts a foot wrong and holds its value accordingly. For a large portion of the car-buying public, the Golf is simply the benchmark. When a car with that reputation commits seriously to plug-in hybrid technology, it carries a weight with it.

The facelift of the Golf eHybrid was nothing short of remarkable. The battery grew from a modest 13kWh to 19.7kWh, catapulting the official electric range from 44 miles to 88 miles, a clear doubling of range that shifted the car from an eco-boost to a genuine daily EV substitute. The just like the above Audi, the Golf pairs a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine with an integrated electric motor through a six-speed DSG gearbox, producing a combined 204bhp for a 0-62mph of 7.4 seconds.

When it comes to charging, the AC saw a rise from the previously modest 3.6kW to 11kW, and DC rapid charging capability of 40kW now included - meaning a 30-80% charge can be completed in around 30 minutes at a public rapid charger. The Golf is capable of running on battery power up to 80mph, including on motorways. Real-world usage of the Golf shows actual electric ranges of around 66 to 72 miles in mixed use. Still more than enough for most daily commutes.

2. Chery Tiggo 9 - 91 Miles

Chery sits in similar territory to Omoda in the public consciousness, it's another Chinese name that, despite the value, most UK buyers would struggle to place. It is actually the parent company behind Omoda and Jaecoo, the two other Chinese brands you may have started noticing on the road. What might ease any hesitation on this: Chery backs the Tiggo 9 with a seven year/100,000 mile warranty - the kind of confidence that well-established brands rarely match. It's the clearest sign that this is a manufacturer playing a long game in the UK, not simply passing through.

The Tiggo 9 uses Chery's 'Super Hybrid' (CSH) system, combining a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine with a whopping three electric motors - two at the front, one at the rear - for an electrified all-wheel-drive setup producing 422bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 5.4 seconds. The battery is a 34.4kWh NMC unit (nickel-manganese-cobalt), a different chemistry from the Omoda 9's LFP pack, offering a WLTP electric range of 91 miles. Real-world figures of around 80 miles are consistently achievable and several customers have noted the claimed figure is unusually close to reality.

Similarly to the Omoda 9, the Tiggo 9 supports DC rapid charging at 71kW, enabling a 30-80% charge in around 18 minutes - one of the quickest PHEV charging speeds available. AC charging at 6.6kW delivers a full charge from zero in around five hours and twenty minutes. The car also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability at 6.6kW output, meaning you can run laptops, tools or camping equipment directly from the battery.

1. Omoda 9 - 93 Miles

Let's be honest, you've probably raised an eyebrow at the name. Omoda is one of a wave of Chinese car brands that have arrived in the UK over the past couple of years, and if you've noticed unfamiliar badges on the roads as of late, there's a good chance one of them was an Omoda. Initial public reaction to these has tended to follow a predictable arc: scepticism, curiosity, then quiet acknowledgement that the value on offer is genuinely hard to ignore. Omoda is targeting the same buyers who might usually walk into a Volvo or a BMW dealership, and it's doing so with a car that, on paper at least, embarrasses many of those established names on the PHEV spec sheet.

The Omoda 9's headline stat is its 93-mile WLTP eletric range - the longest of any PHEV currently on sale in the UK. That figure comes courtesy of a 34.5kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, using energy-dense 'M3P' cells that deliver more capacity in a lighter package. Real-world range in warm conditions is close to 90 miles, dropping to around 70 miles in colder weather - still an exceptional achievement and more than plenty for most people to commute for a week before needing to charge.

The powertrain, Omoda's 'Super Hybrid System' (SHS), pairs a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors (one for each axle), producing a combined output of 449bhp and 0-62mph in under five seconds. The petrol engine most often acts as a generator, charging the battery or assisting under hard acceleration, which means the car drives like an EV the vast majority of the time.

Charging is where the Omoda truly sets a new benchmark in this class. It supports 70kW DC rapid charging, a rarity among PHEVs, which allows a 30-80% top up in around 25 minutes. AC charging via a home wallbox at 6.6kW takes approximately five and a half hours for a full charge. The car will not allow the battery to drop below 20%, at which point the engine fires up and the system shifts to a Toyota-style self-charging hybrid mode.

These six cars represent the very best of a technology that has finally grown into its promise. With petrol currently sitting at 155p per litre and set to climb even further, a car that can cover all of your daily driving on home electricity - and still take you further with petrol as a backup - is no longer a niche proposition. It is increasingly a sensible choice, especially for those that aren't yet ready for the full commitment of an EV.
